Every kid deserves a safe way to school!

We believe every kid should be able to get to school, walk to the park, or visit friends without worrying about speeding cars or unsafe roads. That's part of making sure everyone has a fair chance to learn and grow.

Safer Roads 4 Kids — it all started on Wootton Parkway!

​

A few years ago, we noticed something that really bothered us. Cars were speeding, visibility was poor, and some intersections along Wootton Parkway in Rockville just didn't feel safe, especially for kids walking to school or nearby parks.

 

Four intersections caught our attention:

• Wootton Parkway & Fairwood Court

• Wootton Parkway & McCormick Road

• Wootton Parkway & Lindley Terrace

• Wootton Parkway & Dundee Road

 

We kept wondering: why should kids have to worry about getting around their own neighborhood?

So we decided to do something about it!

We started the Safer Roads 4 Kids campaign, researched the safety concerns, wrote to Rockville's Mayor and City Council, and worked with city officials to push for improvements.

It wasn't quick or easy. There were emails, meetings, follow-ups, and lots of waiting. But we kept going!

and guess what? things actually started changing!

Our campaign helped bring several important safety improvements to the Wootton Parkway area:

• A new pedestrian island

• Speed radar and flashing speed-warning signs

• Improved pedestrian crossings

• A reduced speed limit of 30 mph

• Additional 15 mph advisory signage

 

These improvements help make the neighborhood safer for families and the 4,000+ students attending nearby schools.

We're still following up with city officials and advocating for additional safety improvements.

 

A traffic study is now underway near McCormick Road!​

​This campaign taught us something pretty important: you don't have to be an adult to speak up and make a difference. Sometimes, you just have to notice a problem, ask questions, and keep pushing until something changes.

Safer roads. Safer schools. Safer communities. For every kid.
